Zine about the intimacy between myself and Rotterdam city
How can we live independently in an era where every second is controlled by technology?
How can we reconnect with the present through our body and mind, and build a tender connection with the city around us?
IntimaCity is an installation artwork that explores the sense of intimacy between people and the city. The work blurs the boundaries between public and private spaces, allowing the body to find a balance between openness and self-reflection. The installation is made from layers of semi-transparent mosquito net stitched together, intertwining various textures and traces of sewing. Inside hangs a small zine that records my intimate moments with Rotterdam.
It also serves as a “private corner” within a public space — a place where people can feel a sense of privacy while still observing the world around them. I hope that those who step inside can reflect on life, and feel the city. Through a simple low-tech website, participants are invited to share their own stories with me, allowing these intimate moments to be documented and exchanged.
For me, intimacy is more like a state of closeness, flow, and sharing. It's a way of opening a part of yourself and allowing others to enter. It doesn’t rely on high-speed computation or digital interfaces, but rather exists in the simplest interactions and sensory experiences.
In the summer of 2023, I moved from Taipei to Rotterdam — crossing 9,500 kilometers to a new city. I chose to put down my phone and navigation tools, wandering through neighborhoods to rebuild connections just through my senses: feeling the cold wind on my skin, smelling the dry air, and seeing the shifting light filtering through the leaves. Especially when the sunlight scattered between the branches, it reminded me of my daily walking through the park in Taipei. It's an intimate memory that transcends cities and time.
IntimaCity was born between these moments, like a container built with the simplest materials, carrying the intimate flow between people and the city.
